Giap himself said more than once if not for the anti-war fanatics they would have given up earlier and lost 500,000 less people.

In case you didn't know it, despite General Giap was the celebrated hero of Dien Bien-Phu in 1954 and the general that took the initiative of the Vietnam War from the American forces with his Tet Offensive, he was not well regarded by his peers. In fact, for a while at least, he was passed over for the top army post.
I believe this was due in part to his turbulent wit (sarcasm and irony and satire) which often offended the top brass.

BTW, General Giap could have been sarcastic when he said on several occasions that were it not for the anti-war movement in the US, he and his men would have given up very much sooner. And you swallowed that hook, line and sinker! LOL!
