But a lot of my friends have been there. And all of them say expensive.

Then perhaps housing and land prices have not fallen enough.

As for food, Japan would do well to ease import restrictions. When you try and supply the number of people they have lacking enough farmable land, that is the kind of crap that happens.

The US and Japan are both going to be forced to eliminate crop subsidies. We simply can not afford them.
