It is ironic that Republicans do all of the deficit spending. The CEO of any company is charged with one mission - to maximize profits. In order to do so, it is important that the leader of the company show the ability to issue debt. Look at all of the corporate bonds that were issued in 2000, 2001 and 2002. It was hard to find a new issue after 2002. Raising debt is the ultimate act of capitalism. One of the greatest critics of capitalism was Karl Marx. One of his most humorous criticisms was that capitalism would deteriorate as the rich sat around clipping their bond coupons. I loved the comment -it helped me figure out where to go at the end of 1999.
