Thanks, Ann. On that same walk in the dark rain shortly after 9/11/01, I saw an unknown parcel on a park bench. I reported it to the first person with a security uniform that I found several blocks away. He said it probably was the belongings of some homeless individual. He said it was common for them to leave their things lying around in such places.

Frankly, I'm not all that sure it was smart for me to be walking around in the dark alone. My only protection was my very sharp bone-handled knife, which I kept open and in my hand, in the pocket of my parka.

That fellow praying towards Mecca, I'm not sure he was mentally unbalanced. He could have been a bona fide Muslim, and I understand they are required to pray five times a day. His choice of location was very unwise, I thought, in view of the recent activities of Muslims in airplanes. People were still pretty angry then. I could see the fellow being beaten up pretty badly by a street gang looking for an opportunity.
