Jim, Bushes best defense would be to say that we needed to run a deficit to insure against a recession...generated by the Clinton Bubble. AND we will clean it up in the second term. Can't do that because it might be construed as raising taxes.

I doubt it will be construed that way, but I also doubt that Bush will portray it as such. Most likely he'll just connect the deficit to the war on terror, that the deficit is under control and that it isn't THAT bad, yada yada, then promise something as nebulous as "things will get better as the economy improves."

Two more "El chimpo" performances like the first debate and Bush is in big trouble. The only thing he'll have going is the fear of Kerry.

Like I said before, Rove is probably "retraining" Bush in preparation for the next debate. How well Bush does his "homework" will be evident soon. But even I won't pretend that Bush is good at "doing homework."

re: There have been jobs created in the past 3 years but a lot of them have gone to illegals.

Net, he lost jobs. And the "created" jobs are at the very low end of the scale.

re: Kerry "should" trounce Bush on the deficit alone. Bushes best defense would be to say that we needed to run a deficit to insure against a recession...generated by the Clinton Bubble.

Yea, that's been the spin. He inherated a upcoming recession and then 9/11, and managed us out of it.

re: Imagine a Democrat pointing to deficits to get elected?

Man, wake up. The Democrats are the new "traditional" fiscal conservatives. Look at the actions, not the sound bites. The neos have no fiscal responsibility, their priorities are political not fiscal.

re: Two more "El chimpo" performances like the first debate and Bush is in big trouble.

"Big trouble"? Right now it's a dead heat. I imagine it's going to be in the same place in 11/2 (baring an "event"). Flip a coin.

John

BTW, good post for a change. What got into you to actually post some thoughts instead of ome liners?

Imagine a Democrat pointing to deficits to get elected?

In fact, there is no surprise at all.

Since WW II, the deficits pretty much have come down under every Dem. president and gone up under every GOP president. Another urban legend...........the stock market does better under a GOP president. WRONG!

Since WW II, the stock market has grown fastest under Dem. presidents.
