President Bush had led Kerry since June until faltering in the TV debate in front of 60 million. They saw him mispronounce words and phrases, and get rattled and defensive on several occasions during the 90-minute discussion dominated by Iraq. He also kept fidgeting on the podium while his opponent spoke. Karl Rove, Bush's senior political aide, later admitted Vietnam veteran Kerry was "arguably the better debater of the two". And a poll for Newsweek magazine gives Kerry a 49-46 lead over Bush in the presidential race. Kerry is also taking the Democrats' parody of Bush as a man who cannot speak clearly on Iraq on the campaign trail. He told a rally: "He keeps trying to say, 'Well, we're not-we-don't-know-we-don't-you-know, we don't want somebody who wants to leave (Iraq)'." And in a TV advert Kerry accuses Bush of having "not been candid with the American people" over the Iraq conflict. Bush, 58, has also gone on the offensive since the debate four days ago. He has blasted Kerry on Iraq and said his opponent would leave decisions on national security to be vetoed "by countries like France". But Kerry, 60, has struck back vowing to, "hunt and kill the terrorists wherever they are". The next debate, on domestic policy, is on Friday in St Louis, Missouri, and the third is scheduled for October 13 in Phoenix, Arizona. The election is on November 2.mirror.co.uk
