Yes it is insane, his comment that is. These weapons were not common before the law, and were not even banned by the law.

Maybe not in DC but they were in LA.

Not in DC, LA or anywere in the country.

Its possible some CA law actually did ban them but I was talking about the federal law not state law.

What I meant was that these weapons were common in LA and I suspect in many of America's inner cities.
