Avoiding Vietnam wasn't exactly a rare thing. Clinton more clearly avoided Vietnam as did many other politicians from both major parties (and probably the minor parties as well). Its one thing saying "I don't like Bush, I think he is a bad president and I won't vote for him, but I did like Clinton". Its another to say "Bush avoided service in Vietnam so he has poor character and always took the easy way out, Clinton avoided service in Vietnam and was a good person and a good president". Avoiding service in Vietnam is only bad for one if its also bad for the other. Have whatever opinion you want about Vietnam and avoiding service in that war but at least be consistent. You can still hate Bush without this inconsistency... I don't care that Bush avoided going to war by entering the NG. What I do care about is the following: 1) That he was given an advantage for entry over others because of his father. 2) That his service performance was not of good quality. That he behaved in the service much like he behaved in his life to date.......like a spoiled, pampered dilettante. 3) That his campaign encouraged the swifties to attack Kerry and his medals; a man who did serve his country honorably and did not try to avoid fighting in the war. ted
