That was the past. Our country would not have been served by dragging the counting out for another six months. Given the bloated number of appointments, it is almost impossible to have any staff approved by the end of January following the November election.

If you want an argument about the fairness and accuracy of counting in 2000, there are far more partisan posters out there.

It is humorous that the time allotted was probably envisioned to make provisions for moving to the capital. Thomas Jefferson did not like some of the Cabinet Secretaries, but did not replace them because he thought that would set a bad precedent.
