The Nationalists maintained control of Taiwan. The Communists were unable to take it over. That is rather unilateral, it wasn't like the communists wouldn't have liked to take it over. Since then (over 50 years now) Taiwan has not been ruled by the mainland even nominally.

Taiwan represent itself as a sovereign nation state

Taiwan offically does represent itself as a soverign nation state. The mainland is just a whole bunch of "breakway provinces" if you believe this idea.

Taiwan is given wide latitude to conduct its own administrative affairs.

Just as the US has been "given" a wide lattitude since 1783.

Edit - Do you understand the difference between a nation and a state?
