Few countries want to step into the catastrophe that we have unleashed in Iraq. After a rape, it is a bit too late in the game to call in a Priest and declare the victim to be the lawful wedded wife of the rapist and then invite everybody to the reception to toast the bride and groom and wish them a happy-ever-after. The UN has agreed to engage in a salvage mission in Iraq -- but the propects for salvaging much out of this mess are not good. The UN is only effective when there is a mission that member countries can support -- they did not support the unilateral US invasion of Iraq and rightly hesitate to come in and try to bail us out now.
