Malcolm,

There are other examples.

FRO is not a trust but a Norwegian shipping company. They outperform most trustsin CG and pay a 13% dividend. The trust structure is not a prerequisite to paying dividends or capital gains.

PTR pays a 5% dividend. I'm not sure PEY can hold a candle to PTR on a business scale basis. On a CG basis PEY, ZAR and others beat PTR, but PTR beats approx half of the CRTs I looked at.

Then there are the US CRTs. Too much of this non-resident noise will drive investors into SJT and others. Again, like PTR, SJT doesn't beat PEY, ZAR but it does against many.

With the exception of perhaps PEY and ZAR and maybe HTE, FRO and SJT win on CG and only HTE has more yield.

There are many European businesses paying approx 5%: Jay's TATE.L, NYSE: LYG Lloyds Bank.

You can also get preferred shares and non-callable corporate bonds that pay respectable, stable yields of 5-7%.

If the Canadian gov't isn't careful, they'll drive the US investors out and leave the share prices beaten down so the Chinese can come in like vultures. While I'm not rotating, I'm not sure some Americans don't look at the Canadian FM's proposal and say 'Naw, I'm better off in FRO, SJT, BPT, LYG, PTR etc'. We might be too.

CRTs aren't the only game in town.
