Dumbya's father displayed the same over-optimism during the Gulf War. He said he didn't go after Saddam because he was sure the Iraqi opposition would topple him. Nothing of that sort happened. Instead, millions were lavished on Iraqi exiles over the years in the vain hope that they could effect the downfall of Saddam. Some Iraqi friends of mine who had returned to visit family and friends during the period (1994-2001) told me about the horrible social conditions in Iraq resulting from the sanctions, and the Iraqis there spent so much time eking out a living that they had little or no time to think about Saddam and their problem, let alone creating any significant opposition. Unlike what the opposition said abroad, the Iraqis at home were as meek as sheep and resigned to their fate. They believed it was the will of their Allah!
