In my estimation, liberal banning [pretty good pun there, in case it might have slipped by you] is not a good idea but there's always self-censorship, which is much more effective.

We don't have to read or respond to inflammatory stuff from posters who wallow in this kind of behavior [yes, yes, I've been guilty too, before anyone goes searching for my bad behavior to proudly prove the point that I'm no saint, either].

The new format with the "ignore" feature disabled will make this much more difficult. On the other hand, its absence will be good for posters' self-control.

Unless the power to ban is in the hands of an unusually wise person, banning becomes an exercise in unfettered control and power. In this sense, FaultLine is the perfect moderator as he has never used his banning power for these ends.
