LONDON (AFX) -- Signalling it's prepared to raise the stakes in U.S. complaints over Brussels susidies for Airbus, the EU said it has "requested consultations" with the U.S. in the WTO over what it called "massive subsidies" for Boeing . Earlier in the day, the U.S. filed a WTO complaint on what it termed "unfair" Brussels subsidies to Airbus, which is 80 percent owned by European defense group EADS and 20 percent owned by BAE Systems . The EU said it "believes that these (Boeing) subsidies are in serious violation of the WTO Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures." EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy said in a statement: "The US move in the WTO concerning European support to Airbus is obviously an attempt to divert attention from Boeing's self-inflicted decline... f this is the path the US has chosen, we accept the challenge, not least because it is high time to put an end to massive illegal US subsidies to Boeing which damage Airbus, in particular those for Boeing's new 7E7 program."
