They tend to wear off in 4-5 months. A lot of people get them when they first come out in September and a lot of flu seasons last through March. OTOH you don't want to wait too long as it takes them 2 weeks to take effect. If you haven't had one in the last 5 years you may want to look at getting the pneumonia shot too.
