<<Barnett's work is a recipe for a kindler, gentler imperialism that might be a good idea if it worked. But it doesn't. We haven't made more than minimal progress in Iraq and Afghanistan apart from changing the regime at the top.>>

MaryLou:

Isn't it a little early to claim FAILURE?

There are TWO distinct issues subsumed within your statement:

(1) DOES BARNETT'S CONCEPT OF "CORE" AND "GAP" AREAS OF THE WORLD ACCORD WITH REALTY?

In this connection, the writings of Francis Fukuyama suggest that it does.

(2) GIVEN TIME AND PROPER METHOD, CAN THE STRATEGY WORK?

I have written extensively on why why our occupation strategy has been too PC to work, most recently my summary of Anderson's book, "The Fall of Baghdad."

Did you really expect any Middle East strategy to be both easy and quick?

A little patience, no?
