It's actually an interesting topic.

The Bible calls for fellowship and to associate with fellow Christians. Just as much as it states that wherever two or more are gathered in His name He will be there.

So, is attending church necessary? Hard to say. Do I judge a Christian on whether he attends Church? no way. I attend Church sporadically. I do not feel that adversely affects my developing relationship with Jesus Christ. I read the Bible & try & learn scripture & associate with others who share those goals. That is fellowship on a daily basis, not just on Sunday. I think daily is much more important.

'Many of them do not know he almost never bothers to attend church. But ask them about their neighbor who doesn't attend, and they'll judge him as a "heathen."'

Upon what stupidity and ignorance do you assert the facts above.
What is almost never is not so important. I don't know of any Christian who judge others a heathen based upon any strawman of how they attend a church.
