The annual rates of heart attack in both the Celebrex (celecoxib) and Vioxx (rofecoxib) studies were increased compared to a review of studies containing a total of more than 48,000 patients. In those studies, 0.52% of patients taking an inactive placebo pill had a heart attack each year. The annual rate of heart attack was 0.74% for patients taking rofecoxib and 0.80% for those taking celecoxib.

Most of those not on drug plans in North America (the majority) will likely not have the income to afford the high priced cox-2 inhibitors,...so they will take aspirin, ibuprofen etc. and screw up their guts, kidneys etc. By the time they have done much damage, they will have no choice but to switch to a Cox-2 Nsaid (or maybe Pennsaid), so these trial participants will already be in bad shape.

Many of these studies do not correct for the fact that the people they are studying have a long history with older NSAIDS, so are in a frail state to begin with. If you want fairness, you will want to cite a study that follows patients who have only taken Celebrex for their arthritis symptoms, against patients that have only taken the old NSAIDS.

Of course for the purposes of the current smear and lawsuit campaigns against the industry, useful statistics get thrown out the window. U.S. malpractice lawyers actually pay search engine companies like yahoo and google for the top entry of a search result containing key words like Vioxx and ulcer,...prices are going over $10 per hit and they are getting tens of thousands of hits.
