You're right, of course. The wonks in charge of the Republican party these days are particularly vicious. I think the swiftvet scam is without precedent, and Chief Wonk Grover Norquist is well known for twisting Clausewitz' famous dictum "war is the continuation of policy by other means" into the really sicko saying "politics is war by other means". In other words, the Republican view of the US political process has become quintessentially the opposite of what America is all about. It's no longer the complex and difficult process of arriving at compromise among world views. Rather, it's a battle between the good guys and their enemies. Polarization is their basic creed.

You yourself have seen one manifestation of that insane view on SI: posts by maniacs who claim that there is no such thing as a "loyal opposition" in the U.S. anymore and that therefore political dialogue is irrelevant--you're either a Republican or a traitor, including half the U.S. Senate. A significant portion of the poulation actually believes that. We need divine intervention to get out from under this situation, regardless of who wins which election or which "debate".
