BTW I appreciate all your posts here and on real estate thread.

I didn't check the link itself, but do you think they are adding up all the debt of this credit-consumer society to figure out net "worth"?

You get tax breaks for mortgages, but otherwise, debt is not a good idea. I have no credit card debt at all, zero.

• Average personal wealth of a 50-year-old American, including home equity: less than $40,000.

my guess is that they are counting zero personal wealth for the pensions people are receiving. i was talking to a municipal retiree recently whose pension is in the 4K/month range, plus health care. capitalizing those cash flows could easily top $1 million at today's interest rates, but according to these types of stats, such people have zero "personal wealth". remember the old saw about there being lies, damned lies, and statistics...

Surviving on Social Security alone usually entails a diet of tinned cat food.

and going forward, maybe tinned air. check out "The Coming Generational Storm", a great book that details the great impending bankruptcy of the US social welfare net.
