Henry & Maurice, "Responding to a national flu vaccine shortage, state Public Health Officer Richard Jackson on Friday issued a public health order directing all California health care providers to immunize only those at highest risk for serious flu complications and to refrain from offering flu shots to healthy individuals. ... In the South Bay, the crisis leaves San Jose Medical Center, Regional Medical Center, Good Samaritan Hospital and 4,000 residents of Santa Clara County nursing homes without flu shots. The local declarations ``allow the public to realize how grave the situation is,'' said Dr. Marty Fenstersheib, the county's health officer. In Santa Clara County, any providers found violating the new flu shot rules could be subject to investigation by the district attorney's office, Fenstersheib said Friday. ``We have that authority under this local declaration.'' ... But healthy people ages 5 to 49 who want flu protection can consider FluMist ... ``The situation really demonstrates how fragile our system of vaccine distribution is in the United States,'' said Poki Namkung, health officer for the city of Berkeley. Concord police reported that two other seniors, women ages 76 and 83, were hospitalized Thursday after collapsing outside a Costco store from possible heat exhaustion while waiting in a long line for the vaccine. mercurynews.com
