I'm questioning how useful a UPS is for me. Me too!

I got an APC Battery Back-UPS 725 at Best Buy on the day after Thanksgiving. It cost me about $12 net after rebates. It was an impulse purchase because it came with $75 in rebates. I have never used a UPS and never lost data in the twenty years I have been using PCs. Maybe I have just been lucky. I do use a surge suppressor, however.

In any case, I took it out of the box for the first time last night. This thing must weigh at least 15 lbs-- heavier than my computer. It must have a huge transformer. Wonder how much power it uses all by itself.

I am trying to decide whether to keep it or return it to the store (even though it was a bargain). I also read in some reviews that many of these units have a buzz noise problem, although APC is supposedly responsive to the issue. My question: Do I really need a UPS?
