The race of people doesn't matter. The system certainly does matter. RE: "And anyone who believes all Americans are is also intentionally blind" Likewise, anyone who believes our system doesn't need to get to the next level of improvement is 'blind' (your choice of word). RE: "It is quite possible to do R&D and engineering in India" Sure, if you want all your engineering eggs in one basket. What happens if there's a little turf war between India & Pakistan. RE: "And the chances of those problems increase with distance and differences in language and culture." True, but you get rid of those people that don't know how to get along with other cultures or that don't know how to decrease the distance. RE: "Infrastructure" There still are infrastructure issues. High risk to put a fab into India. Also, airport situation is quite poor. Truly the opposite scenario in China, where China has the benefit of communism's efficient central planning - China has built an airport that is quite impressive. India's democractic system has created an enormous level of inefficiency - there is no strong central planning arm, like you have in China. Of course, China has SARS and they love to hide it too, so that creates a huge financial risk. RE: "I see no way of getting the genie back in the bottle." If (as a country) we don't do something about enhancing funding to research engineering, we could be have a hard road ahead. Neither political parties seem to see the value in promoting the sciences. When I was a kid, the stories about the 50's and the high amount of govt funded RND (as a %) was impressively stunning. It seems pretty bad these days. Regards, Amy J
