You also have to run a ground into your yard to make the circuit. Battery run units are also sold. You can get the wire that is woven into plastic so it looks decorative.

I had a horse kick me into my 6,800 volt fence and it stung so bad I jumped back at the horse. Better kicked to death than fried. Odd thing, I had a colt that liked the shock. He'd bite the wire and pull it down.
