Bush started bombing Iraq on the 2nd or 3rd day after Inauguration. You have a good point. >>Saddam was Bush's father's "bogeyman"<<

I think invading Iraq gave Bush a way to best his Poppy, like Edipus. Dumbya has been hearing for a decade that Poppy screwed up not taking Saddam out when he could, that Poppy was a wimp and didn't have the stones to do it. It's been a source of family shame. Bush went into office wanting to use it to remove the shame. 9/11 gave him the cover he needed.
So he cherry-picked some intel and invaded Iraq on the wave of American anger following 9/11. He caught Saddam, bested Poppy, and showed the world that the Bushes HAVE stones, and he's got MORE than Poppy! End of fairy tale!
But, as Kerry pointed out in the first debate, Poppy had warned him that capturing Saddam would not be worth the problems it caused. Kerry told Dumbya that he should have listened to his Poppy, that his Poppy has wisdom and was right. Poppy was right on other things too, like raisng taxes in the face of a deficit. Kerry will remind Dumbya.
If ONLY Dumbya had conferred with his Poppy!
