Sources: LG.Philips LCD opts for a 7G fab instead of an 8G Compiled from outside sources; Carrie Yu, DigiTimes.com [Friday 8 October 2004] Although LG.Philips LCD is reported to have been planning the construction of an eighth-generation (8G) TFT LCD plant, equipment makers have indicated that the South Korea-based panel maker has decided to opt for a 7G fab instead, according to the Chinese-language Commercial Times. The new fab will process 1950×2250mm glass substrates, each of which can be cut into six 46-inch panels or eight 42-inch panels. The company was previously reported as planning to cut 2160×2400mm substrates into 50-inch panels at an 8G fab, the paper quoted equipment makers as saying. The makers also pointed out that LG.Philips LCD may postpone equipment installation at the fab by one to two quarters later than the originally planned roll-in date of May 2005, the paper said. Since the process will be delayed, any oversupply of large-size panels will not be exacerbated in 2005, the paper indicated. Some Taiwan-based panel makers have also adjusted their schedules for their next-generation plants. According to a September 16 article, both AU Optronics (AUO) and Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) have changed or delayed construction plans for their respective 7G and 7.5G plants while HannStar Display is postponing the equipment installation plans at its 6G plant, sources pointed out.
