Oliver Twist etc." I think you 'mis-underestimate' (grin) the effect all those thousands of special interest loopholes already have on the society. With compliance costs conservatively estimated at 200 Billion+ per year, a drastically simplified tax code could provide an immediate and continual net gain to the entire society. Not-to-mention the much higher productivity our society would be capable of if the government stopped picking the economic winners and losers... and business were able to make investment decisions solely based upon rational economic factors, instead of merely trying to capture tax benefits and subsidies.
