Hewitt Questions Rather’s Credibility
Don Hewitt, the creator of “60 Minutes” expressed serious doubts about the credibility of his former colleague Dan Rather in an interview Thursday night with FNC’s Bill O’Reilly, questioning the CBS anchor’s judgment and his ability to anchor network coverage of the 2004 election.

Asked if he though Rather should have verified the reporting of Memogate producer Mary Mapes, Hewitt emphatically agreed (see extended entry for full transcript).

“When you get to be you or me or Dan Rather, you better do that or what are we doing on the air?” he said. “There’s no story worth putting your life on the line for.”

Hewitt even wondered if his former employee should be allowed to head CBS’s election coverage.

“Here’s the problem. Do you put him on the air election night with this cloud hanging over him?” he wondered.

“I’m glad I don’t have to make that decision,” Hewitt said, calling it an “agonizing” one.

The retired producer also emphatically stated he would never have run with the story of whether or not President Bush evaded the Vietnam draft.

“It’s not a story,” he said. “They didn’t ask me.”

Had he been asked, Hewitt said he would have put the kibosh on the story.

“I would have told Rather what John McCain told John Kerry. Vietnam is a loser. Don’t go near it,” he said. “It’s years ago. There is nobody in America who doesn’t believe that George Bush’s father got him out of going there. You know how many American fathers got their kids out of going out of there?”
