There were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Yesterday, Charles Duelfer, the administration's top weapons inspector, reported that Saddam Hussein's ability to produce nuclear weapons had "progressively decayed" since the 1991 Persian Gulf war and no evidence was found of "concerted efforts to restart the program." Duelfer's report is the most definitive accounting done to date. Together with the 9/11 Commission's finding that Iraq had no relationship with al Qaeda, Duelfer's report begs the question: Was war our only option in Iraq? There were no weapons of mass destruction. According to the Duelfer report, Saddam had no stocks of nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons. Research into producing the weapons ended a decade ago after the 1991 Gulf war. Sanctions and U.N. inspections had actually succeeded in preventing Saddam from reconstituting those programs. Bush administration's war justification completely unravels. President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and top administration officials repeatedly trumpeted Iraq's nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons programs to justify the war. The Duelfer report debunks their claims one by one. It now appears that they cherry-picked and manipulated the intelligence to deceive the American people. Saddam was not the grave and gathering threat the Administration portrayed. Meanwhile, Iran and North Korea have expanded their nuclear programs. On the administration's watch, nuclear proliferation by the other two countries in the president's "Axis of Evil" have been ignored. North Korea has quadrupled its nuclear weapons stockpile and made threatening gestures towards its neighbors. Iran has rejected demands by the International Atomic Energy Agency and has begun to turn tons of yellow cake uranium into weapons-grade nuclear materials. americanprogressaction.org
