But in the poll, taken on Oct. 6-7, Kerry beats Bush on likability and has surged among female voters. In a three-way race, the president and the Massachusetts senator each got 45 percent. Independent Ralph Nader (news - web sites) got 3 percent. In likability, Bush trailed Kerry, 70 percent to 65 percent. Bush still leads Kerry by a wide margin, 81 percent to 42 percent, on "sticking to his positions." Just before the first debate last week, Bush was up by 6 points among likely voters in the Time Poll. One reason for Kerry's resurgence was that he recaptured a large lead among female voters, according to the poll. Women now favor Kerry over Bush by 12 points, 50 percent to 38 percent. Before last Thursday's debate, the Time poll found women split evenly, 44 percent for Kerry and 43 percent for Bush. Bush maintains a solid lead on being commander in chief and in fighting the war on terrorism, but his advantage has shrunk. On the commander in chief question, Bush leads Kerry by 9 points, 51 percent to 42 percent, with Bush's lead down from 16 points before the debate. On the war on terror, Bush leads Kerry by 15 points, 53 percent to 38 percent, down slightly from an 18-point advantage before last Thursday's debate. Kerry again leads Bush on handling the economy (49 percent to 42 percent), health care (52 percent to 36 percent) and understanding peoples' needs (49 percent to 40 percent).
