Lawmakers urge officials to mandate flu shot priorities By Maggie McNeil
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW)-- Lawmakers on Friday grilled U.S. health officials on how they can get better control over a shaky U.S. flu vaccine supply so that high risk groups like young children and the elderly are vaccinated first. Officials with the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control told lawmakers they have no control over distribution of the vaccine but were willing to consider condifying into rules guidelines to shift the supply to the high risk groups. Members of the House Government Reform Committee also pressed the officials to make vaccine production more attractive for U.S. companies so the nation would not be squeezed from production problems overseas.
