OK, not a hoax, but definitely overhyped


Hard to tell. Had it not been hyped, a lot of companies wouldn't have taken the threat seriously enough. Then we would have seen a lot of software crashes in January 2000.

Lots and lots of companies had some piece of mainframe software that dated from the 70s running a basic part of their operation. These "old charlies" were finally examined and/or replaced in the late 90s precisely because of Y2K scare.
