Trying minimizing all windows and see if there is an Acrobat message asking for permission to check for updates hidden under another window.

I am assuming that the pdf file you are trying to open was being downloaded. Has happened to me a few times. Either the file was corrupted at the source or had transmission errors.

I will open a known good pdf file that already exists on my pc. If that works, problem is somewhere else. If not, I will reinstall the acrobat reader.
