XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Re : The Presidential Debate in Town Hall Format Mary Lou: You asked me for my reaction to an article by an obviously unsympathetic critic of President Bush. The points made by the critic and my reaction follow: 1. Bush' Refusal to Acknowledge Specific Mistakes. I agree. This was my biggest disappointment in his performance last night. As you know, I am not an uncritical admirer of the President's Administration. The most relevent to you is the manner that WE attempted to occupy Iraq. Of course, I could say that it is unclear how personally involved he was with these occupation decisions, but since it happened on his watch, he definitely SHOULD have acknowledged the mistakes in this regard. On the other hand, Mary Lou, remember this: THE HABITS OF EMPIRE ARE NOT INNATELY AMERICAN. And I would acknowledge some truth to the unargued (g) thesis of my Brother Ed, that the Islamic World is particularly raw about strangers and their gifts - and their presence! 2. Bush's Answer Re Importation of Drugs From Canada. I acknowledge that the President was not persuasive (TO ME) on this issue, but that is because I am unalterably opposed on practical economic and social grounds to ever allowing such an importation. The "safety" issue is a phoney objection, I agree. WOULD YOU BE SO KIND AS TO ADVANCE WHAT YOU FEEL ARE YOUR GROUNDS FOR ALLOWING THIS IMPORTATION? I will then respond. The rest of the objections to Bush I found spurious and unconvincing being generally unsupported by any facts or argument. ON THE WHOLE THEN, Mary Lou, you will be unhappy to learn that I was immensely pleased with President Bush's performance last night. He was articulate and animated; Kerry, on the other hand, in many instances, altogether avoided the questions -so as to start on his repetitive "speaking" points - and generally seemed tired and uninspiring. ONE SYMPTOM OF "CONSERVATIVES" FOR WHICH I AM VERY PROUD, is that we can rehearse our differences in public. The "left", OTOH, is overly anxious to present a facade of spurious "unity", and is meager - to say the least -in its reluctance to concede anything which might redound to the credit of President Bush.
