That's a very thoughtful post in light of the typical discussion. Without answering the unanswerable question of whether a deity actually exists, you hit the motivation factor, the factor that answers why religious teachings are so much alike, and why extreme views have more similarities with each other, irrespective of the overall religious views.
You can read the extreme views on this board, proclaiming their own superiority and salvation, and much would be interchangable with extreme Taliban views, extreme Jewish views, extreme Christian views, etc. I don't know much about Hindu beliefs, other than their outwardly peaceful facade, so I can't lump them in. But, bottom line, add power, money, real estate, and you have extremist religious views causing more deaths and suffering in the history of mankind than any other cause.

chuck, I believe that there is one great, and powerful, deity, that brought the elements together, and provided the ignition, for the "so called" big bang. After millions of years of evolution, and the forming of different groups in different areas of the earth, they came up with different names for that single power. From there, the growth of these societies brought about different ways to worship this power, and different myths were embraced for the needs of that particular society. I believe that, in the beginning of these societies, the aim of the worship of this power, was to bring harmony, love, and peace, to the people, but as is human nature, the original thoughts became corrupted, and such is one of the major causes of wars, and mistreatement of their own kind.

It seems that, whenever, human beings get involved in the "god" business, there is trouble being brewed.

Chuck,
Aren't they all really the contrivance of mortal man

A contrivance is basically a lie. If a person believes in a lie, then faith in it is useless to him. If a person believes in truth, then that truth produces a certain effect for him.

My life was changed by Jesus Christ, a man who lived here, then died here (like anyone else) but remarkably came back to life and left his tomb, and entered Heaven. He is mankind's Man in Heaven -- the very Son of God. That is the claim.

When I met God through this man, Boom!! Ever since then (now 28 years), I experience a constant stream of answers to prayer and a peace in my heart which I fervently wish you knew for yourself. Have you ever experienced the presence of God? I have and I do, on a regular basis. There is nothing like it in all the earth.

I get no money for telling you this, nor hope ever to see a dime for it. I certainly have no hope or occasion to control your mind or your life. My only hope is to introduce you to someone that you may very well believe is a myth. If he is indeed a contrivance, then I am an utter fool to risk the mockery of the cynic by telling you this. See for yourself, why don't you.

If you do, it is only fair to tell you to be prepared for something -- That your life as you know it will be over and a new one will be given to you. That's the price and that is what you get.

Is faith an idle Sunday morning distraction for you or is a new life worth more than that to you?

As far as the answer to that goes, I have absolutely no more power or influence with you.

Stan

Men will use anything to control and manipulate others.

Is it any surprise that men should also use that which
other hold as most precious - namely - faith in God?

Also - when discussing religion one must remember that
there is true religion as well as the many false.

True religion comes from God - all false man made religions
are condemned by God as sin and idolatry.

The "best" false religion is one thay most resembles the true
without actually expressing the thoughts and intent of God.

James said this:

James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the
Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their
affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

That is far from any intent to "control" others.
