Not exactly the same problem but...about a month ago I downloaded and installed a couple of Microsoft updates (security updates) not SP2. I immediately lost my network adapter folder...network connections was not listed. I was unable to access the internet. A variety of other glitches...no system restore etc.

I messed around with registry settings..downloaded a Winsock fix...ran a number of trojan and worm finder programs. I gave up. Finally I ended up reinstalling Win XP Home.

What a pain.

Just one of many things that I tried...

Unfortunately, it certainly sounds like SP2 hosed your system. Sounds like you should back up everything you need to keep and prepare for a fresh install.
