"Cheap labor Republicans". These three words explain most of their actions. And in this case, it is the reason why they don't want to do anything about it.

That doesn't mean that they won't make political capital from it, of course. Those who lived through Prop. 187 in California know exactly how Republicans exploit the issue for their own political gains, while both the illegal immigrants and the legal residents get screwed.

Bush is meeting the political competition. Why don't the Democrats go gungho on cracking down on illegal immigration (withhold social services, forbid them getting drivers licenses, etc) and opposing amnesty for illegals? They'd pick up votes from Republicans if they did.
