Any ideas on when and how it got to be a free world?

Depends on which history books one reads in schooling days.
To me a start was in 1857, in India.
Later, I learnt about 1776 in the US.

Does that answer your question ?

Re Freedom.

<<Any ideas on when and how it got to be a free world?>>

A good way to start the day, define freedom.

I assume you mean unfettered, like bird.

But the more free we are , the more we must consider what others believe and the more rules there are which must be obeyed.

Freedom of expression was certainly lacking under Saddam.

Our own freedoms are determined by courts and by layer after layer of laws , rules, and regulations.

I was waiting for Kerry to call Bush an outright liar during their debate.

It diidn't happen but he came so close with words like deceitful, not being honest, etc. Words like traitor and Awol were not heard.
