After I hear from Microsoft I will do the fresh install. I see no way around it.

That's sure what it sounds like.Wish I could suggest an alternative.

ARe you trying ot back up to CDR of similar? If you can find another hard drive. Jumper it to slave and copy needed files to it from bad disk. You can do this from an XP DOS floppy boot disk if necessary.
