socialist groupthink

Apparently you are just as certain that you yourself are not subject to indoctrination as you are that I am. If that isn't a contrarian indicator, I don't know what is.

Core competencies are already a matter of hierarchical control. It's called the educational system, which maintains priorities right up through graduate education. Or do you not believe in that? I was merely proposing to add another.

qualitative differences in products appeal to non-rational aspects of human behavior. Therefore, society as a whole will be better off by mandating the products that are produced, and therefore the specific needs that are satisfied.

That's entirely your logic, not mine. I was suggesting, as was Grace, that the choices people make for the products they wish to consume is often based on denial of the consequences of those choices-yes, irrational behavior. The fact that you think this has something to do with "mandating the products that are produced" is a bizarre and unwarranted leap.

As far as the flawed logic of those irrational decisions is concerned, quite alot of research has been done in the area of financial management decisions that people make. I'd be surprised if the findings don't also apply to how people spend their money.

Beyond that, I don't intend to litter this thread any further.
