As a politician John Howard (Prime Minister of Australia) is very adept at frequently changing his positions to conform to the latest polls. In the process he most often takes advantage and control of someone else's agenda.

By intercepting refugees trying to get to Australia by boat and placing them on non-Australian islands like Nairu, he certainly grabbed away the mainstream supporters of Pauline Hanson's "One Nation Party".

I like this "movie poster" of John Howard and his Minister of Immigration Philip Ruddock making fun of the new policy for refugees.

Likewise, Howard spotted the increased concern about the environment a couple of months ago and created hugely expensive new programs to address those concerns for many voters and won the recent election.

In this way Howard has very much made himself into the image of the modern American politician.

This poster appeared when Howard's support of private healthcare subsidies and his recent foray into Iraq had made him quite unpopular. Party Leader, Bill Heffernan, was making noises about dumping Howard as PM before the elections - as only a Parlimentary system can.

Howard quickly back burnered the insurance subsidies and stopped new troops going to Iraq. Shortly there after he reduced the 2,000 Australian troops in Iraq to 850. If that becomes a problem, I'm quite certain he will remove the 850 on the very next flight.

Here's two cartoons showing John Howard's remarkable transformation into an environmentalist just two months before the elections.
