It's obvious that the swifties have not yet come to terms with their actions in Vietnam. Profound experiences must be thought about or talked about before they can become settled in the mind of those affected. The swifties are unable to deal with their experience and so try to imagine themselves in a more heroic setting. They can easily dismiss the critics who stayed at home and protested on TV, but Kerry holds a mirror to them, one in which the reflection cannot be deflected by anger or protestations that they just don't know what went on. He makes them think, and they don't want to. It's a sickness, a mental disease, and they will not be cured by palliative slogans.
