but the evidence as presented by UW is that patriotism

Do you consider Kerry to be such a patriot to make him worthy of sacrificing your son's blood?

karen, maybe the word "patriotism" should be used differently.

If a person, or people in the country, DON'T BELIEVE they/we should be fighting wherever we are fighting, and why, perhaps that is more the issue. Evidently this is what is happening to some people in this country. They don't seem to believe that this is a real war, and that they think the very murderers who have said they want to destroy America, "including Christians, Jews, and Americans", really don't mean that they want to kill us. PC and all of that. This group of people might join the Military to travel, or for job fulfilment (as you say), and/or to participate as a support group, and fight if necessary, but it would be hard for them, if they don't belive in the cause, nor in their CIC.

For other people, or people in the country, BELIEVE we should be fighting wherever we are fighting, and why, it is easier for them to lay their life down if necessary. These people do believe this is a real war, and they believe the murderers who have said what they have said. They enlist, and try to help their country, wherever possible, and in whatever capacity they are able. This group of people already believes they are helping their country, and the world around them. Most probably they do respect their CIC.
These people are heros, IMO.

In a limited way, I could use an analogy of 'firefighters.' These men and women actively try to prevent fires BEFORE they start, by educating people.
They proactively have every piece of equipment and gear ready BEFORE a fire starts.
They go into a fire BEFORE the fire takes hold if at all possible so as to quell it.
These people are all heros, and patriots, IMO.

In the examples above, I think that anyone who gives of him/herself so that others may remain free, safe, and live, then these people are all heros and patriots, IMO.

Patriots are people, again IMO, who actively try to save their fellow citizens, and their country, against an active enemy who is intent on destroying civilization and the citizens of that civilization.

I am patriotic, but did not enlist in the military, because it was not a good fit for the type of person I am, and it was optional. In the case of national emergency, I would pitch in as occassion warranted, but it is better to leave military service to those who talents lie in that direction, under the current system. Similarly, as long as it is not an affirmative duty, various issues will effect enlistment. Patriotism is only one issue, and not decisive in terms of enlistment. I would not care to serve under a CIC in whom I had little confidence, absent affirmative duty........
