Analyst Patrick Ho with Moors & Cabot said the magnitude of Novellus' projected order drop-off surprised him the most. Novellus predicted its orders would decline 22 to 25 percent sequentially while Ho expected an order decline of between 10 and 15 percent.

"I think a lot of it has to do with their customer exposure, but they may be losing some market share to Applied Materials," said Ho.
