so why did kerry vote against the first Iraq war and for the second Iraq war?

I don't know his reasons. I imagine he has answered that question somewhere, though.

Kerry didn't vote for the second Bush war.

Instead he voted to allow Junior Bush to applly pressure to Saddam to ensure that he did not have weapons that could threaten the U.S. The war was entirely Junior's idea (With a little help from Cheney).
