Hi, jb.

My current assessment is that the tech sector is in a state of malaise. There is a lack of dynamism or "animal spirits" in the economy; it seems that the focus on safety wrt terrorism has also carried over into a more general emphasis on defense versus offense. It is not an environment in which risk-taking is encouraged or rewarded, imo. The tax rate reductions have not benefited tech as many expected, because so few tech stocks have been growth stocks since the changes were enacted. I'm overweight in tech, but it's mostly long-term basis holdings from 2-3 years ago. I have a lot of cash, too, but I'll probably be looking outside of tech for new purchases. I'd prefer to be looking at tech; the economy is not in a good state when the top performing sectors are in primitive extractive industries.

I still think SOITEC is a decent long-term opportunity, but I see no need to buy (if you can) until we get more enthusiasm for tech. I guess the main question for the long term, the same for any tech company, is "do they have an adequate barrier to Chinese bandits?" I think they do, although they have already been ripped off by California bandits, so who knows?
