"If you believe in the domino notion of democracy, i.e, Iraq will become a model of democracy copied by the countries in the mid-east, why wouldn't it work if you picked on Jordan or Egypt? "

It was a matter of opportunity. Despotic totalitarian, mass murdering tyrant with wmds or desire to re-obtain them, screwing around with inspection process while bribing french and others with oil for food scandal working for the day when sanctions would be lifted and he could re-ignite his wmd program in order to yield power over the entire region. In retrospect we could have waited to fight this guy later, but i suspect it would have been even harder later rather than it has become sooner. Best thing he is gone and this threat from this country has been neutralized even if all is not well in iraq today.
Also, if iraq or any other arab state did in fact become a functioning somewhat democratic, pluralistic republic with a more robust economy (even if not a total democracy or total capitalism) would become an alternative to those attracted to the fundamentalist magnet. Thats why the terrorists have been attracted there because they realize how crucial iraq is to their cause and we certainly should make our best attempt to defeat them. I think we can agree on that. mike
