News flash: The massive report suggests that Saddam would resume production of WMD at some time in the future, provided the chance was given to him.

Reality: Of course. Simpson's speak: D'oh!

Which is why 9/11 gave the President carte blanche to argue for permanent intrusive inspections, backed up by force to remind Saddam he had no choice.

Now there is a workable "doctorine" Bush could have tried. Imagine for a second he'd been the uniter he claims to be, and built a real multinational coalition, not the excuse in place now where most countries supply zero troops and zero funds to the coalition effort.

Had he done so, he'd have

a) won international respect - significant political capital to be used when next needed, and there will be a next time to be sure,

b) eventually got to the truth of the WMD matter and saved enormous political capital now wasted,

c) far fewer casualities on all sides,

d) spent far less, thus reducing the deficit and also opening up the potential for spending in other areas in the war against terrorism, anti-proliferation efforts, domestic security and other domestic agenda items.

Just for starters...
