Z,

re: raising minimum wage causes job losses

I said, it could. It doesn't have to lead to fewer jobs. If other conditions improve in conjunction, that won't happen.

What other conditions do you have in mind in conjunction of minimum wage rise? El Nino?

Do you know what it's like to raise a family on $5.15/hr? If that's the best we can do, then we are seriously f**ked.

How is it compared to $0.00/hr?

Joe

If that's the overriding reason for raising the minimum wage, then we should raise it to $18/hour, given that a study set the "low income" level at around $36,000:

Of course, I exaggerate to make a point. Minimum wage was never meant to feed a family. To me, it only serves as a floor so that businesses are prevented from exploiting cheap labor.

It doesn't have to lead to fewer jobs. If other conditions improve in conjunction, that won't happen.

The point is that raising the minimum wage will indeed create a negative effect on jobs. It's nice to aim for improving conditions so much that we can afford to raise the minimum wage without losing jobs. But we're stuck with the reality that the economy can only grow at a certain rate. So which statistic should we focus on? Lower unemployment, or higher wages for workers paid by the hour?

By the way, Z. Did you catch Laura Bush on the Tonight Show last week? Among other things, she talked about her daughters on the campaign trail, and how they saw some potential suitors holding "Bush-Cheney" signs with phone numbers written on the bottom.

You're working for the wrong team!
